"My dog will eventuall

y outgrow chewing once the puppy phase is over!

"Not. Always. Correct.

Some dogs do grow out of chewing, however, chewing is a natural instinct with dogs. Dogs will chew for a myriad of reasons:

  1. It keeps a dog's jaw strong

  2. Boredom

  3. Cleans teeth

  4. Helps a dog relax

Below are tips to help with your munching pup:

  1. With puppies, they are chewing to alleviate pain in their jaws. When the adult teeth start to come in, puppies will try and find relief from their pain...and if they do not have appropriate toys they will FIND something to chew:

    1. Table legs

    2. Chair legs

    3. Drywall

    4. Shoes

    5. Sticks...  the list can go on!

  2. Your older dog could be chewing because they are BORED. So get your dog out! Take them on a walk, run, maybe even a drive around the neighborhood! You could also play fetch, teach your dog a new trick (or a few!), or play some scent work games. You could also get your dog some new toys and chews! (I'll list a few of my favorites below! 😃)

  3. Dogs will also chew due to anxiety. This could be an issue with dogs who suffer from separation anxiety - they are trying to calm themselves. Chewing is an activity to help dogs relax. So if you do have a nervous or anxious pup - make sure you have plenty of chew toys to help out your pup. Make sure you also have an area in the home where your dog can relax and chew in peace. 😊

"What kind of chews and toys do you recommend?"

Below are a few of my favorite chews and toys for dogs:

Baymax's favorites! He loves the No-Hide chews! They come in all different sizes and flavors. They also offer seasonal flavors! I remember they had a BBQ flavored one for Labor Day Weekend!

Kong is one that almost everyone knows. Kong's toys also come in different colors for different ages:

West Paw Toys have gained popularity over the last few years. Most are durable and great for games such as fetch! I will actually recommend these toys more than Kong!

If you're also trying to deter your puppy from munching on the wall molding (It's a delicacy, don't you know!) or anything else they like to chew on, there are sprays you can use to help with that.

With the white vinegar, you can mix together 50% water and 50% vinegar. If your dog likes it, just add a little more vinegar!

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MONITOR YOUR PUPPY/DOG WHEN GIVING THEM A NEW CHEW OR TOY. IT'S RARE DOGS CAN CHOKE BUT THERE'S ALWAYS THE POSSIBILITY.

I hope all of these tips have helped you and your dog as the week has gone on! 🐕

I'm only a message away if you have any questions or concerns!
