Potty training is one of the toughest challenges many pet parents have when they first get a puppy, just know: you can do it!
Here are some tips to guide you:
Getting your puppy on a schedule is key. If your dog is on a schedule, then you know an approximate time they need to go out. Dogs LOVE routine.
So how do you get them on a schedule?
Here are 3 ways I always recommend:
Go old school, get a notepad and pen and write down every time the dog uses the bathroom whether it's outside OR inside. My favorite kind of pads are the ones where you can stick them to the fridge, so if the entire family is involved in helping, they can also take note of when the dog went to the bathroom. Record the time and whether the dog went number 1 or 2, even if an accident is made in the house.
Use the note section on your phone or download an app where you can take notes. If you can share the notes amongst your family, that would make keeping track of the potty training even easier!
You can download either a dog app OR a baby app (yes! a HUMAN baby app) where you can log whether the dog has gone number 1 or 2!
"BUT NICOLE! Whenever I run my dog out to potty they don't and when I bring them back in, they potty! Why is that?"
There could be two reasons why:
You aren't giving your dog enough time to potty. Give them anywhere from 10-15 minutes to fully empty themselves out. I know...it's winter and it's cold 🥶 but bundle up! You want to set your pup up for success!
You're letting your dog sniff too much OR you just let them out into your fenced in backyard and they think it's playtime! You want to physically bring your dog outside on leash to their potty area. Once you bring them to their potty area...stop. Don't let them do too much sniffing or they'll become distracted. IF you stay in their potty area and do not allow them to wander, they'll more than likely go to the bathroom.
When your dog potties outside?
Throw a...Potty Party! 🥳
Who cares if your neighbors think you're nuts?
You're teaching your dog an important skill!
What if my dog has an accident in the house?
Get a newspaper, roll it up...and hit yourself in the head!
Most likely your pup made a mess because you weren't paying attention!
If you are unable to watch your dog because you need to run to the store or even run to the restroom, then make sure your dog is contained in a crate, playpen, etc. where there is enough room for them to lie down, but not enough space for them to potty.
